Stephen Wolff was born 3rd June 1958 in Orange, California

Some of his earliest and best memories are of going with his grandfather to his small hard rock mine where he learned about setting caps and fuses in dynamite and then blasting the stone to extend the tunnels that followed the vein of gold. With that came the thrills and danger, hard work and disappointments that is part of the pursuit.  Stephen also watched his grandad shaping metal on his small forge, enamoured by the colours of the hot metal shifting and changing as it heated and cooled.  All this then created a wonderful foundation for appreciating the metals processes in the budding sculptor.

Stephen's father is an artist who always had wonderful cartoon's and illustrations he had created lying about the house making great stimulus for Stephen's imagination.  Especially given that his childhood playthings were cast off scraps from a ranching and mining frontier past, filling his mind with a rich backdrop of future reference material.

At 14 Stephen's family moved to Silverton, Colorado, where his father established a woodcarving business which Stephen eventually followed, developing his own style and an appreciation of wood.  He participated in many Art shows, including being one of three demonstration woodcarvers at the National Woodcarvers Showcase.

Eventually he began working in clay and fell in love with its diversity and possibilities.  A trip to Europe to explore the world's great Art and Architecture gave Stephen insight into the human side of these great works , he then began to pursue and create works with greater emotional values he had felt unable to express in wood.  Next he started to focus on clay for bronze, although he still works with wood, paper, stone, concrete, steel, or whatever medium is appropriate to a piece.

Stephen is interested  in how the body and mind interact and how as a sculptor he can tell a story with our emotional values interwoven with our physical nature and freeze that moment in a piece of sculpture and have it "speak" to its audience.  It is Stephen's desire to infuse his sculptures with fragments of the unending myriad of human emotional experiences, spanning from love to despair and sometimes both at once as this unending subject matter is the paint for Stephen's palette.

Stephen's other interests and jobs have included: over 20 years designing & building homes, additions and remodels, building inspector, city councilman, historic restoration, mold making, door & furniture maker,  gallery owner and athlete.
